Sydney’s Band Haven, Still Band Heaven

The Annandale hotel

Twenty years ago you couldn’t walk down any pub-strip around Sydney’s inner suburbs without hearing Aussie pub-rock wafting through the night air. The so-called “yuppie-isation” of inner Sydney, combined with tougher noise and licensing laws, has made the pub-rock venue an almost extinct species. The heady, head-banging days are long gone, but there is one institution flying in the face of club culture and reviving the live arts in an island of Aussie band pub culture.

The Annandale hotel has become a focal point around inner Sydney for any aspiring band, along with plenty of old favourites. To owners Matt and Dan, the mission was a serious one attested by the fact that three years ago they put their hands deep into their pockets and purchased a Nexo Alpha-e PA system supported by Nexo PS15 foldback wedges, all powered by Camco Vortex.
The bands and sound guys love it, but most importantly, the venue hasn’t looked back and consistently full rooms prove once again that reliable quality sound is a key ingredient in building a venue client base.

Chains were on special that week! You need to tie it all down when the punters get going on a big night.

Just chuck it under the stage’. Despite drinks, dust, punters and occasional low voltage, the Camco amps just keep it coming. ‘Just chuck it under the stage’. Despite drinks, dust, punters and occasional low voltage, the Camco amps just keep it coming.

Capitalising on the success of the last three years, the Annandale is undergoing renovations to extend the second bar/band room. It’s been a risky and hard road for the Annandale management but the venue has become a Sydney live music icon and definitely has a great future. There are suggestions that the live rock band market is undergoing a developing revival at the moment, with improved attendances at touring concerts, lots of teenagers learning guitar and new bands starting to sell CDs again. A new generation is rediscovering just how much fun it is to bang out some R&R to a room full of screaming punters and the Annandale is leading the charge.

The gangs all here, and so is an old RCF Art 500A, still the world’s loudest plastic box. The gangs all here, and so is an old RCF Art 500A, still the world’s loudest plastic box.

As the venue develops, it will be another ten or so years before the main room will need another PA. That’s got to be the world’s cheapest PA, if you add up all the gigs, and Matt and Dan are in for the long haul.
