Nexo Charms the Irish at Mean Fiddler
Having recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation The Mean Fiddler in the Sydney suburb of Rouse Hill blends Australian tradition with Irish charm. The renovations bring in a contemporary element whilst complimenting the existing history. The venue’s Nexo Geo S sound system was installed by Rutledge Engineering and successfully managed to fit the brief and comply with sound requirements, as to not bother the neighbors.
The Woolshed, a popular live entertainment venue located with The Mean Fiddler, boasts all the traditions of the truly iconic Australian woolshed, and evokes an atmosphere of the bygone era. The venue may have wooden black butt flooring, exposed beams and corrugated iron enhancing the days of old but there’s certainly nothing ancient about the sound system!

In fact Rutledge Engineering has recently installed the latest in state of the art audio courtesy of Nexo, one of the leading sound reinforcement loudspeaker manufacturers in the world. A high quality, kicking system, that is visually unobtrusive, was required. It also had to be compact in size as the Woolshed stage is fairly small even though many popular acts, particularly of the country persuasion, perform at the venue. Particular attention was paid to providing a system that would deliver high quality audio that would have minimal impact outside of the venue as there had been noise complaints in the past. The audio needed to be loud but not at a club level.

“We decided upon the Nexo GEO S system as it met all of the criteria,” explained Nick Orsatti, Rutledge’s Operations Manager. “The Nexo GEO S system provides the clear clean sound of Nexo in a compact line-array that can fit where other systems can't. The performance advantages produced by GEO innovations are easily measurable and clearly audible. The system sounds just the way we want, and importantly where we want it so there are no complaints from the neighbors.”
Together with Group Technologies, the Nexo distributor in Australia, the team used the Ease modeling program to determine the best speakers and their location for optimal coverage. Four GEO S cabinets are placed either side of the stage with Quest Audio HPI 218S high powered compact sub bass enclosures providing general purpose bass and sub bass enhancement. Nexo NX242 digital processors and Camco amplifiers drive the system.
Chris Beaumont, House Engineer at The Mean Fiddler is more than impressed by the Difference the Nexo System has made to The Woolshed
“I am convinced that Nexo systems are capable of providing not only best of breed sound quality, but also design innovations that give their systems a unique solution to problems an audio designer faces” stated Nick. “The quality has to be heard to be believed.”
Rutledge also designed the audio for other areas such as the beer garden which Quest and RCF speakers and the gaming lounge, which again house Quest speakers.
