DiGiCo counts in Telstra’s corporate band rehearsals
The Set-up, High Above Melbourne
What kind of company band can you have when your company has thousands of employees? Well the answer is, a pretty good one. Recently Filter witnessed a promotional gig by the Telstra staff band, One Click, One Touch, to test new material in the foyer of its Melbourne Headquarters in Lonsdale Street. The band is part of a Telstra sponsorship for Rock Inc., Supporting Olivia Newton John’s Cancer Centre. This was just a band warm up for the real thing, an international corporate battle of the bands.

Now the corporate Battle of the Bands is no ordinary band contest. When company pride is at stake, you might be a lowly employee one day and the next, the toast of the board. And Telstra is taking this serious enough to send along some senior management heavyweights to keep time.
“Advanced Audio has had a relationship with Telstra for many years now, with this being the third year Telstra has formed a staff band” says Kieran Lang, one of Advanced Audio’s engineers. “It’s a great experience for the band, most of them are part time muso’s in some form. Getting day job support and the nicest gear around makes their experience worth while for the un-paid hours of travel and practice they put in”.
A rehearsal room with a view
Advanced sent in their big guns to simulate as much as possible the big gig environment with DiGiCo and Nexo. Pete Rickman loaded all the toys for rehearsals in the executive boardroom on level 43 high above Melbourne, “The D1 did a superb job of eight sends of monitors, we used the quick access internal EQs on each send and compression on whatever channel or send needed”.

The fun didn’t stop there. The DiGiCo stage rack pre amp configuration enabled the guys to do a quick multi-track recording, allowing the band members personal mixes for solo practice when they got home. “I even ran the drum & bass tracks for rehearsal whilst a couple of the musos went on a break”, commented Pete.
A round of applause for the band
The Rehearsal Rig Comprised of, DiGiCo D1, Carillon PC with Nuendo, 8x PS 10, 4x PS 15 and Camco Techton amps, a mic kit and a few stands. (note: all Gear ins, stage, EQ etc. fit in a Transit van). The event gig used the above with a Double Alpha E system for FOH.
(Advanced had to take our three ton truck for that one….damn drapes!)
