Digital Technology and very loud powered boxes equals a 10,000 people PA you can fit in a 2-ton truck? Filter 8: Digital Technology and very loud powered boxes equals a 10,000 people PA you can fit in a 2-ton truck?

Digital consoles are the sexy new product for the financially endowed. You can’t open an audio publication these days without seeing someone or other’s tour featuring a mass of LCD screens on a big board. This is pretty amazing seeing that there are only 2 accepted brands at the big end of live audio town. Old analogue sound guys may resist it but the reality is, one day soon they’ll wake up one fine afternoon to find that that the digital work surface is in just about everybody’s gear rider not to mention production inventories. It is now at a point where even regional production companies are joining the big digital desk club.

The Digico D series makes one’s transition to digital less of a culture shock with its analogue intuitive layout.  The boffin-free gig zone this issue is augmented by the new timber powered RCF 4PRO series of self-processing speaker systems. Not too dear for a production box, but will they be loud enough? That’s the question confronting Stav from Pro Light and Sound but Jay from IJS Sydney knows the answer to that question. But it doesn’t stop there from RCF.

Last of all, PowerWise introduces flashing lights to the boring old power distribution board. Information is power, especially when it’s on a “dizzy” board. As always, feel free to comment on anything you read. Send your email to: filter@grouptechnologies.com.au

The birth of the array

The Birth of The Array: Part 05
The Birth of The Array: Part 05

The big black box is not dead, (it just smells funny). Remember that powerful pub fragrance that greets you when you open a big cable packer road-case? Well the old fashioned array may still a have a usable place long after the new smoking laws mean smell neutral road cases. Now that we have studied the phenomenon of multiple arrivals, wavelength dependent phase shift and node/antinode lobbing from multi box arrays, maybe we can use this information to resurrect the big ugly cluster. One tool to make a pile of point source boxes work really well is the delay line. If you can get this to work well, you’re on the road to legend status. Have Birth here…
