Springtime trade exhibitions in the northern hemisphere mean lots of new products are to be making their way south.

‘tis the season for trade exhibitions, and this year saw a massive showing of new product at the two major audio industry trade exhibitions. With NAMM earlier this year and the Messe/Pro Light & Sound in Frankfurt just over, expect to see a whopping range of new gear being flogged by the marketing departments of all the big players with new gear that slices, dices and mixes like never before. As always Filter jets its way to see what the key players will be sending our way and this edition finds a bumper crop of products from our favourites at Nexo, Camco and RCF, along with a few new surprises you will be hearing all about over the next couple editions of Filter.

So gear up to get the low-down on the best new gear in this special Frankfurt edition of Filter. We do hope you enjoy it. Auf wiedersehen.

Frankurt Pro Light & Sound 2006: Any bigger and you’d need a passport
Frankurt Pro Light & Sound 2006: Any bigger and you’d need a passport

The 2006 Frankfurt show seems to get bigger every year. Obviously the music/production industry is growing and becoming even more sophisticated, but there are there are many questions that need to be answered, such as, how many ways can you make and badge a speaker box? How much truss? Can we get more flashing lights? Read on to get a thin slice of Messe without suger…

Nexo Geo-D: From pub to arena in one jump
Nexo Geo-D: From pub to arena in one jump

The Frankfurt show saw an endless collection of new strings of black boxes caterpillaring their way into Mime Street, but there was one audio caterpillar that did an “Eiffel Tower in the desert” stand out job. This was the new Geo-D tangential array…

Advanced gets further ahead with Geo-S
Advanced gets further ahead with Geo-S

There probably isn’t a PA system in Melbourne working more constantly than Advanced Audio’s Nexo Geo-S rig, and a question often asked by the crew at Advanced Audio has been, is there any gig this PA can’t cut it for? Advanced Audio has been on the Nexo bandwagon for a while now and it all started with the purchase of a few Nexo boxes after a clean out of some old clunkers…

New wave of RCF speakers sends ripples to the end of the earth
New wave of RCF speakers sends ripples to the end of the earth

RCF have made a big comeback in the last couple of years. They have redefined the plastic box, renovated the Neodymium driver with higher than ever temperature capability, and for a speaker manufacturer, make some pretty good electronics. Add to this RCF is just about the last manufacturer to manufacture all their own speaker components. (That’s to keep their trade secrets a secret) and it shows in the finished products, which were seen recently at the Frankfurt’s Pro Light & Sound…

Camco amplifiers made smarter with UCA DSP
Camco amplifiers made smarter with UCA DSP

There’s nothing worse than spending a pile of money on a hot new killer product to have it suddenly obsolete before your third lease payment. That will never happen to a Camco owner as shown here with the new Camco DSP-Module allowing either Tecton or Vortex amplifiers to become a Universal Controller Amp…

Another Frankfurt find: Xilica Audio Design
Another Frankfurt find: Xilica Audio Design

A high-quality system controller can really empty your bank account. There’s thousands of man-hours, and lots of zeros and ones, before you have a finished black box that will route the railway shunting yard of matrix signals, DSP contour your audio path and protect your speakers. That plus a quality AD-DA converter is why they are so expensive. Group Technologies may have a cure for this wallet amputation process with a new product from Xilica Audio Design…

Wild Gravity, Shannon Noll and the big drive
Wild Gravity, Shannon Noll and the big drive

Back in the rock and roll heyday, life was one long tour. Unroadworthy vehicles plied primitive highways with the main priority to leave town before the damage bill, or equipment repossession industry, arrived. Those days might be in the hands of the industry legend factory now, but there are still a couple of production companies willing to burn lots of rubber and diesel to get the show on the road…

  The French Connection (Correction)
The French Connection (Correction)

You could be excused for thinking that the preceding BOTA chapters have been leading inexorably to a big punch line, like a laborious joke or a daytime soapie where the suspect-looking, nonconformist weirdo, dramatically unmasks the villain who previously appeared to be a paragon of virtue. There’s no villain here but there is a nonconformist and also a happy ending. Get comfy, because it’s a big read…
